when I open a png file the whole image is gray checked. How do I get the image to be white? I have PSE3

Debbie that is OK. That just means there is NO COLOR. If you were to print it, the checked background would NOT print! It would just print the image outline.
If you want to fill in your image white (which wouldn’t print anyway, unless if was overlaid on a color/patterned bkgd) you can use your paint bucket or fill option.

    Hi Lauren,
Thanks for the video! I have a question regarding the shading…is there a way to get to the blending options other than right clicking? I’m working on a MAC which I’m still learning…I think it will be an never ending endeavor! :o )

      Hi Paula!

You can double click the layer to bring up blending options. When you double click, don’t double click the actual title but the dead space around it. Double clicking the title just selects it so it can be renamed.

Or you can also just click the layer once to select it and then click on Layer > Layer Styles from the top menu.

Let me know if you need any further assistance!

Thanks Sara for getting back to me so quickly. Sorry for the mix up, I thought it was Lauren that put the video together and posted it. I tried both methods and neither one worked for me. When I double click (on the icon – not the dead space) nothing happens. When I click on Layers – then Layer Styles – the only option that isn’t grayed out and available to me is “Hide all Effects”. I don’t think this software installed properly, because I’ve tried other tutorials and have run into this sort of thing before. I’m not really sure how to uninstall and/or correct it. I feel pretty comfortable working with a PC, but totally lost at times with my MAC.

It’s no problem Paula! Lauren is the BOMB so I don’t mind being confused with her in the least bit! However, she may mind being associated with my thick Texas DRAW…hehe! ;D

As for your problem…let’s forget the double click method for now. Using that top menu will be our best bet while trying to figure out your problem.

I MUST ask the obvious as this was a common problem I personally had when I was learning Photoshop. Are you CERTAIN you have the correct layer selected when you click on Layer > Layer Styles from the top menu? If you don’t have the correct layer selected the proper options could be “grayed out”. Just want to double check this.

Hey Paula! If you DO have the correct layer selected, please let me know which version of Photoshop you’re running, that will help me research your issue a bit. I’d be happy to try and help you work through this issue!

Oh and one more QUICK thing to check…are there any layers locked? Do you know how to check for that?

      Hi Sara,
Yes, I do have the correct layer selected, I’m trying to add the layer style to the layer that I just created by adding the color to a selected area. I’m using PSE version 6. The only layer that appears to be locked is the original digi stamp that I opened. It’s the only one that has the lock icon.
Thanks so much for helping out with this, but I really don’t want to take up too much of your time.

After coloring the digi stamp, can it be converted to an svg file for cutting on the cricut via Make the Cut?
Thanks for the tutorial. I don’t have PS, but have Corel Paint. I wonder if I can do the same sort of thing.

      Hi Terri!

No you can’t, I’m sorry. I don’t know if we have plans to release a cut file for this stamp but I’ll be sure to ask!

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I started coloring a couple of images after seeing this and I have a question. I actually have Photoshop Elements 8 and I am trying to figure out how to do the shading. Is it possible to do it in this version of Photoshop? Just wondering because when I right click on the layer I have just colored the menu that pops up does nto have the same options as yours. Thanks for your help!

    Lisa says:

Anyone have any ideas on how to make this work in PSE? It doesn’t have the blending options that are available in PS. I can get inner glow through effects but can’t work it out where it is lighter in the center and darker around the edges. There’s bound to be a work around, but I can’t quite figure it out.

    Sara says:

Well it looks like I need to make a tutorial using PSE….I’ll look into it…stay tuned!

I too have PSE but have not had the time to learn it. I will definitely give this a try so thank you for the inspiration.

    Paula I says:

Thanks Sara for offering to make a tutorial for PSE. If you get the opportunity to post it, I certainly will be checking that out! Your last tutorial was very clear and easy to follow and I really appreciate you taking the time to help us out.
